Ein Hysgol
Our School

In Autumn Term 2022, our vision statement, The Waldo Williams Wish,
was co-constructed by the staff and governors of Waldo Williams Primary School in line with the four purposes.

To be ready for the CfW we asked all out stakeholders:
- Why do children come to Waldo Williams Primary School?
- What kind of learners do we want to develop
- What should we teach and why?
- How should we teach it?
- How will this support our learners to realise the four purposes?

Cwricwlwm i Gymru | Curriculum for Wales

Improving education is our national mission. Nothing is so essential as universal access to, and acquisition of, the experiences, knowledge and skills and that our young people need for employment, lifelong learning and active citizenship.

Opportunities for learning within the Curriculum for Wales are organised in six Areas of Learning and Experiences:  Expressive Arts, Health and Well-being, Humanities, Languages, Literacy and Communication, Mathematics and Numeracy, & Science and Technology. Together these provide broad, meaningful and interconnected educational experiences for our learners as they progress towards the four purposes.

The  Four Purposes are the shared vision and aspiration for every child and young person. In fulfilling these, we set high expectations for all, promote individual and national well-being, tackle ignorance and misinformation, and encourage critical and civic engagement.

A school’s curriculum is everything a learner experiences in pursuit of the four purposes. It is not simply what we teach, but how we teach and crucially, why we teach it.

Ultimately, the aim of our curriculum is to support our learners to become:

Ein Gwerthoedd Hysgol | Our School Values

At Ysgol Waldo Williams our school values of Ready, Respectful, Safe underpin our school's culture. Our values are used in every conversation between pupil and staff; staff and parent/carer and it is very important that the whole school community recognise these values.

Developing a growth mindset approach across the school enables a positive environment for all.

Through our values we strive for consistency from staff to develop a positive culture.

EIN HANES | OUR HISTORY

In January 2019, Mount Airey Infants School and Haverfordwest Church in Wales VC School were combined into one school. We chose to name our school Ysgol Waldo Williams / Waldo Williams School to commemorate the name of a Welsh language poet and a local icon. In March 2022, we moved to our new school. Take a look at our fantastic new building below.

We moved into our new school building in March 2022. Take a look at some photos of the site, along with the building plans below.

DEWIS ENW | CHOOSING A NAME

Waldo Williams

1909 - 1971

We asked our pupils for their view when choosing a name for our new school. We were delighted that they chose the name of Waldo Williams Primary School. Waldo Williams was the great visionary poet from Pembrokeshire and he was born in Haverfordwest. He was a kind and generous man that spent many teachers teaching in Pembrokeshire. The children were given a chance to do a lot of research on Waldo. They were inspired by Waldo because of his passion for teaching and learning and love of Pembrokeshire.

A portrait for our school

What greater way to commemorate Waldo Williams than to create our own portrait to proudly display at our school?

Our work with Nathan Wyburn

Pupils worked alongside the talented artist Nathan Wyburn for four days making unusual art by using a variety of materials to paint with. The final collage of Waldo Williams was created by using images of the children hard at work to create the final portrait.  Waldo’s portrait will be proudly displayed in our new school building.

Our work with Rhiannon Roberts

We also worked with talented artist Rhiannon Roberts to design and create a wonderful mural of our school within the locality. We researched significant and important buildings in Haverfordwest to include in our final design. We also made sure that we included a reference to Waldo Williams to link to our new school name.
